Q. How will my child benefit from this approach?
A. The most common observations of Montessori students note that these students usually exhibit self-discipline and independence, as well as a genuine enthusiasm for learning and an organized approach to problem solving. Montessori programs, based on self-directed, non-competitive activities, encourage the development of strong self-images and the confidence to face with optimism both challenge and change.
Q. Can students do whatever they want?
A. Montessori education places an emphasis on cultivating children’Äôs sense of curiosity and wonder, parents may get the impression that students can do whatever they wish, avoiding subjects they dislike. This is certainly not the case in the Montessori elementary class. Work is introduced and guided by the teacher and progress and completion monitored.
Q. How are students evaluated?
A. Work samples are chosen periodically and kept in a work portfolio. Daily work records are compiled weekly and graphed on one page so both the student and teacher can see what has been accomplished.
Work conferences are held between the student and the teacher on a regular basis to discuss progress and future plans for projects and research.
Q. Can gifted children benefit from a Montessori education? How about children with learning disabilities?
A. Montessori is designed to help all children reach their fullest potential at their own unique pace. A classroom whose children have varying abilities is a community in which everyone learns from one another and everyone contributes. Moreover, multi-age grouping allows each child to find his or her own pace without feeling "ahead" or "behind" in relation to peers.
Q. When and how do Montessori children transition to public school?
A. Montessori children encounter little or no problems with transition. They excel academically as well as socially as a result of the experiences they had during their Montessori years. Because the Montessori materials cover the standard school curriculum and go beyond, students are very well prepared after completing Montessori elementary to enter their recommended grade in a public or private school.
Q. How does the school address the Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum guidelines?
A. The Elementary Program incorporates Montessori philosophy and materials into the educational experience of its elementary students. The teacher monitors each child’Äôs progress as it relates to the Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum.
