Dr. Maria Montessori was Italy's first female physician.  Her acute observation skills and love of children led her to develop an educational method that focuses on a multi-sensory, holistic approach to learning.  The child is presented with a prepared learning environment which encourages exploration and hands on learning.  The main role of the Montessori teacher is to act as an observer and a guide to the child's learning.  The Montessori Method addresses the entire child through cognitive, physical and spiritual lessons.

If the idea of the universe is presented to the child in the right way, it will do more for him than just arouse his interest, for it will create in him admiration and wonder, a feeling loftier than any interest and more satisfiying. - Dr. Maria Montessori

From Dr. Montessori

"The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to age six. For that is the time when man's intelligence itself, his greatest implement, is being formed. But not only his intelligence; the full totality of his psychic powers...at no other age has the child greater need of an intelligent help, and any obstacle that impedes his creative work will lessen the chance he has of achieving perfection".
-Dr. Maria Montessori
